Rain Rain and Rain and Rain and Rain and Rain

October 21, 1996

I ventured out among the flooded roads to get the tire plugged (4 holes! $12) and get some essentials. I succeeded in my mission. I also discovered I live on an island. A somewhat large island, but an island nonetheless. 133 was blocked off in so many places, as was 114, that it was hard to get beyond a little sliver of land encompassing parts of North Andover and Andover. The Lawrence Eagle Tribune headline said "Getting Worse" in huge bold letters. At that point we'd already had over 9 inches. Yikes. The obligatory "what if this had been snow" question and answer: 90 inches. Yikes.

Nancy called from Providence and was surprised to hear it was still raining here (10:00PM). It is expected to go on until tomorrow morning. The rivers (Concord, Merrimack, and Shawsheen) are expected to crest tomorrow. This is probably some sort of record.

Meanwhile, my fear of checking the basement is growing. I don't want to know. After the flood of '87 the condo association dug a drainage channel in the basement and covered the cracked wall with a metal plate to divert the water. I am counting on it working. I am also no doubt repeating myself. Have I mentioned it's raining?
