Autumn in New England

November 1, 1996

Rita's deck looks out over Mt. Cranmore. The clouds are gathering there like for a convention rather than a storm. It's supposed to be really cold today but the thermometer on the deck says it's 46.

I woke up at 6:45 when Joan got up to take her lupus meds and I moved from the floor to the couch, somehow turning my sleeping bag inside out in the process. The next thing I knew it was 8:30 and Rita was making coffee.

Today's agenda: shopping. Joan wants to check out the outlet stores at Settler's Green. It's way too cold and windy for me to walk with this cold so shopping suits me fine even though I'm normally a reluctant shopper.

Wow, I actually bought stuff. Joan, who instigated the shopping trip bought nothing. I came away with 4 desperately needed shirts and a new umbrella (also desperately needed) and some postcards - which I won't have time to write before we have to leave to get Rita home in time to get ready to drive to New York tomorrow morning to see her grandchildren. All three grandchildren will be assembled in one place so she is really excited.

On the drive back I was in charge of watching for moose. We passed through many moose crossing zones but thankfully did not encounter any. We stopped at The Christmas Loft because Joan really really wanted to. The enchanted village type exhibits with little elves sawing away in their workshops was ok but room after room of this and that Xmas collectible got to me. Also the fragrances got to me, so I waited outside. Once we were back on the road it was getting on toward early dusk (hence the moose vigil) and I really wanted to go to sleep.

Once I got home, I perked up again. Wilbur was happy to see me and indicated so by following me around and leaping onto me whenever I sat down. It was really hard to connect to world so I didn't get my e-mail until around 9:00PM. I was happy to see a message from Bobby in Bosnia. He says it's really getting wintry there and he wanted to know how the New England weather is. I immediately replied that I had seen snow on Mt. Washington. I hope he's not too homesick for New England weather! The weather in Lukavac is much much worse than anything we have here...
