Defense of What?
September 12, 1996
I would be angry about the Defense of Marriage Act but it is so
laughable I can't. Couldn't they at least have named it the
"Definition of Marriage" Act? Exactly how does defining marriage as
between one man and one woman defend marriage? What are we
defending it against? Are there legions of queers out there wrecking
heterosexual marriages? OK, so the current Cosmo has an
article I Left My Husband for Another Woman. The IRS is more
of a threat to the institution of marriage than an occasional
rapturously idealized lesbian fling. (Aside: you gotta read this
story. If it was written by a lesbian I'll eat my hat. )
So what are the threats to marriage? the IRS, corporate
downsizing, corporate greed, cancer, heart disease, isolation,
poverty, infertility, domestic violence, indifference, unemployment,
addiction, lack of health care, lack of childcare...
I've seen the members of my own family, gay and straight, struggle
with the forces of the '90s these past couple of years and it takes
every bit of strength we have. Without each other we'd be lost. In
sickness and in health, for richer for poorer, for better or worse we
survive.
End of soap box. This journal thing will get back on track soon. Must
be the weather...
