We explored northwestern Rhode Island today, generally referred to in the media as the Foster/Glocester area. Nancy had been wanting to try brunch at The Blue Moon Cafe in Chepachet, and I'd been wanting to revisit Spring Lake as I have very happy memories of swimming there as a child. Spring Lake is in Burrilville. Years and years and years ago it used to be a resort area. Then it was a kind of rundown summer cottage colony with a public beach and an arcade. Our next door neighbor had a cottage there and we used to visit it in the 50's and early 60's for cookouts and swimming. We never had money for the arcade... The lake is still there. It hasn't been developed into executive housing or yuppie condos or anything. The shore is stuffed with little cottages pretty much like the ones I remember. The public beach is still there. The arcade is still there, with quite a collection of vintage games that way predate my era. I couldn't find the cottage we used to visit. Nancy told one of the kids working on setting up the playground equipment for the season that I used to swim there 40 years ago. He was impressed. Probably went home and told his folks about the ancient lady he met at the beach.
