I ran into Anne and the South African woman at Starbucks this morning as I was leaving having finished my coffee and having no desire to sit and write without air conditioning. Anne told me Ned had been asking for me - she said he said he was worried because he hadn't seen me in awhile. So much for the notion that I could disappear from the earth and no one would miss me. I told her if she saw Ned she should say hello for me. Meanwhile, I'm hooked on Sumatra and Starbucks hardly ever features it as the coffee of the day. I usually get an espresso drink at Starbucks - diluted with milk because Starbucks is not the best coffee - and save my tasty black coffee experience for The Butler's Pantry. Too bad The Butler's Pantry doesn't have tables or space to hang out - it's strictly takeout. So, would anybody miss me if I disappeared? How long would it take them to notice? Nancy would notice at the very next occurrence of 10:00PM sharp. Roberta would notice first thing Wednesday morning because she'd be the only one cleaning the cat cages now that Amy changed to Mondays. Steve Haydock might notice if I was supposed to be on plover warden duty - but then maybe not. Sometimes plover wardens don't show --- or vanish mysteriously into the salt marsh never to be seen again :-) Kevin would notice sometime on Friday. The walking buddies might notice if we're scheduled to walk. Not that I'm planning on vanishing into thin air or anything. I just had this notion that I won't be missed. Dunno why. Wilbur would of course notice instantly and meow so loud the earth would rend open... |
